We recently held a celebration event to mark the fantastic achievements of our boxers, and to appeal to parents and other people connected to the club to volunteer.
And what an event it was! More than 100 people turned out to congratulate our fantastic male and female competitors – including Olympic Gold Medallist Luke Campbell MBE who presented the certificates – and to find out more about volunteering and why the club needs more support.
We’d like to thank all those who attended for turning up and making it so memorable.
A big thanks also goes to everyone who spoke at the event as well, including Richard Longthorp who suffers from Parkinson’s Disease.
Richard gave an impassioned speech about how boxing is helping him with his condition and how it has the capacity to help so many others.
This has led to the club working with other Parkinson’s suffers, as well as people with different conditions, proving St Paul’s is far more than just a boxing gym.
However, by supporting the range of charities, community groups and other organisations we do, and with a rapidly growing membership, St Paul’s is now in need of more volunteers to help the club run smoothly.
Appealing to parents and others to volunteer was one of the reasons for holding the event and we were delighted to see lots of people took this request to heart and came forward to express their interest in volunteering at the club.
We would like to thank each and every one of them for offering to give up their time.
David Garness, Chair of Trustees, said: “What a great event it was! Our boxers have achieved so much over the past year and there are some real stars of the future among them. It’s extremely important to celebrate their fantastic achievements and this was a great way to do that.
“I was also overwhelmed by the number of people who came forward to offer their time to volunteer at St Paul’s. To me, it demonstrates how important the club is to everyone who goes there. Thank you to all who came along – it is generosity like this that sits at the heart of St Paul’s and proves it is far more than just a boxing club.”
